LOCATION

Kornati is a group of islands, islets and cliffs located in Croatian region of North Dalmatia. Group of 89 islands are part of National Park Kornati, declared as National Park in 1980. Kornati is located around 20 km far from Sibenik.

Kornati is one of the most beautiful attractions in Croatia. Many divers, yachtsmen, sailors and mountaineers come here to enjoy in nature and beauty of Kornati islands. Kornati islands have area of 320 km2 of which National Park Kornati has 220 km2.

It is believed that in National Park Kornati habitats 700-800 plants. Some most known are: medical sage, periwig, algae, pastures... Animal life on Kornati: owls, sea-gulls, reptiles, corals, molluscs, fishes...

CLIMATE

Climate in the area of Kornati islands is Mediterranean. It is mild, warm and rainy climate with hot summers. Average year temperature is around 16 ?C. Most often wind in Kornati is bora. But also blow scirocco and mistral. Kornati islands have around 2700 sunny hours per year.

LIFE AND ATTRACTIONS

There are foundings that show that this area was inhabitated even in neolithic. First known inhabitants were Ilirs. They built structures and were directed mostly to agriculture and live stock farming.

There are also foundings that show Roman presence in this area, such as dock in Piskera and Sipnate, salt pan in Sipnate...

Most known building on Kornati is fort Tureta. It was built in time of Byzantine rule. Also known from that time is early Christian basilica in the bottom of fort Tureta.

During the war with Venice, most inhabitants moved from Kornati islands. But after 13th century life was developing again. There are many remains of buildings known from that time like Church of the Lady of Tarac, remains of salt pan in bay Lavsa...

In the end of 19th century Kornati islands were sold, but from 1885., inhabitants of island Murter started buying all Kornati islands.

Tourism started developing on Kornati islands in 20th century. Today National Park Kornati offers excursions to all islands, accommodation in apartments and rooms, diving... Diving is allowed in 9 zones and it is forbidden to raise anything from the sea. In National Park Kornati you can go cruising, diving, swimming, walking, watching wild animal and plant life.

National Park Kornati is private property. There are zones that are under strictly protection and where is not allowed for visitors to go. Those zones are used for allowed scientific research and are: areas around islets Purar, Mrtenjak, Klobucar, Mali and Veliki Obrucan, cliffs Klint and Volic.
